SHEFFIELD and Surrounds

Mt Roland from the lookout at Sheffield Concealed in the foothills of majestic Mount Roland in the municipality of Kentish, is the enterprising town of Sheffield, where history and art merge to create an entire town of murals. Just 30 km from Devonport and 93 km from Launceston, Sheffield attracts an estimated 120,00 people to the town every year to see the murals which can be found on buildings all over the town – even on the town’s rubbish bins! Most depict something of the history of the region, including one painted in 2007 by local artist Mrs Joanne Treloar on our Sheffield railway station! The  popularity of the murals has led to Sheffield’s own special annual event – Check out the link above to find out about Mural Fest!

You can learn about the history of the Kentish district from the murals themselves, or in local museums, and there are also many galleries and studios to browse in. At the Working Art Space you can talk with local artists as they work. Also check out the Kentish Information Centre’s website here
