2010 Achievements

Taken from the President’s Report, AGM September 4th 2010.

This year we have seen some great achievements – most notably:

  • Winning the Tasmanian Community Fund grant application for $39,000;
  • Winning planning approval to construct the 36 x 20m shed to the full height!
  • Construction of the first stage of the shed/Museum complex
  • Commencement of discussions with an architect to prepare the design of the stage 3 future coffee shop frontage to the Main Street;
  • Construction of the Kentish Community Men’s Shed;
  • Running water, power and communications cabling underground across the site;
  • Running another highly successful SteamFest. The bullock team and the stone crusher were wonderful new highlights to this year’s event
  • Running the ATHRA SteamFest Tour during and following SteamFest has generated a nice income stream to advertise future SteamFests and provided us with another important string in our bow with the organization of next year’s event well under way!
  • The locomotive running gear overhaul is well underway to return the running gear to as new condition! Rectification of a number of issues will ensure No 1 gives reliable service well into the future.
  • The purchase of 400 railway sleepers to see us well into the future with sleeper replacements and track construction.
  • Successfully purchasing and transporting 800m of post and rail fence to the site from Wynyard.
  • Securing a team of 12 Youth and Family Focus volunteers over the next 6 months to undertake all those projects we don’t seem to find time to do!
  • Our successful funding nomination for $5,000 from Council to assist with SteamFest site fencing and signage – thanks to Kris Spencer.
  • Submission of grant applications to the Foundation for Regional Renewal for $20,000 towards the gravel pad for the next stage shed, the road relocation and repair of the school building
  • An application for $51,000 for the shed kit and half the erection costs for the stage 2 of the museum complex.
  • Council’s provision of the site lease and the Don Railway’s provision of the Hunslet lease which following our review will secure both for the society well into the future.
  • Our success in winning the Association of Tourist and Heritage Railways “Tourism Promotion Award” at last year’s September ATHRA meeting.
  • Our success in winning the “Best Event” award in the Cradle Coast Tourism Awards
  • Preparing nominations for SteamFest and The Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society for the Tasmanian Tourism Awards.
